Products' carbon footprint

Products' carbon footprint – close monitoring from beginning to end

We calculate the carbon footprint of our products over their entire life cycle, from the production of the raw material they are refined from to their end-use.

Neste MY Renewable Diesel™, for example, has a significantly smaller carbon footprint than fossil diesel. Using Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ enables 50–90% lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil diesel.

The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions achieved through the use of Neste MY Renewable Diesel varies depending on the raw material used in its production. The largest emission reduction is achieved by using diesel made of waste and residues.

Raw material

Emission reduction

Wastes and residues (e.g. animal and fish fats from food industry waste, vegetable oil processing waste and residues)

90% on the average

Palm oil

69% on the average

(already 27% of the palm oil that Neste procures comes from mills with methane recovery systems or systems to prevent its formation)

Other vegetable oils (e.g. rapeseed)

When are emissions generated?

The majority of greenhouse gas emissions associated with renewable diesel is generated during raw material production and is linked to factors such as fertilizer usage. With regard to crude oil based fossil diesel, on the other hand, most of the emissions are generated by end use.

We continuously develop greenhouse gas calculations on the basis of international standards and legislation. Our methods have been verified by independent, third-party experts as meeting the strict quality standards required for biofuels.
