Sustainability – at the core of our strategy

Neste’s vision is to create responsible choices every day with a purpose to create a healthier planet for our children. We provide value for society by developing renewable, low-emission and circular solutions for transportation, aviation, and marine uses, as well as for the chemical and plastics industries. This helps our customers reduce climate emissions and crude oil dependency, in addition to which it accelerates circular economy.

Sustainability is an integral part of our strategy. It is also integrated into our values that guide everything we do.

Neste as part of society

We are in the business of fighting climate change

We help our customers in the transport sector and cities, as well as in the aviation, polymers and chemical sectors to make their business more sustainable. With our renewable and circular low-emission solutions, we contribute to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, as well as the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The six SDGs we see as having the greatest impact from our perspective are SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13 Climate Action; and SDG 17 Partnerships. We are committed to supporting Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) reporting. We create added value to society while enabling our customers to minimize their environmental footprint, which ultimately benefits people, as well.

We have invested approximately 1.5 billion euros to build our renewables production capacity. Today, we are able to produce some 2.9 million tons of renewable products. They provide effective means to combat climate change.

We are investing EUR 1.4 billion to increase our renewable products production capacity in Singapore. This brings our total renewable product capacity close to 4.5 Mt annually in 2022 and enables us to double our greenhouse gas reduction impact from the 2018 level. Managing sustainability

The Board of Directors approves policies covering sustainability, and monitors how Neste performs in terms of sustainability. Neste Executive Committee is responsible for outlining the company’s strategic approach to sustainability and monitoring how sustainability is reflected in the business unit and support function operations.

Sustainability work is the enabler of our business strategy, and sustainability goals are an integral part of the business area objectives. For example, the development of Neste's safety management and practices, as well as increasing the use of waste and residues in the production of renewable products are topical strategic focus areas that require sharing of competence and cooperation across organizational boundaries.

Neste’s business areas are supported by Neste’s Sustainability organization, as well as Human Resources and Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) organizations. These organizations share the responsibility of managing Neste’s sustainability efforts.
