Extreme weather dunks raise awareness for climate change

Extreme weather events have increased over the past decades as a result of global warming. However, many of us still have a hard time understanding the connection. Neste and NBA star Lauri Markkanen have created five climate dunks to help spread awareness on how the climate crisis can be linked to the increase in severe weather conditions. The dunks will be launched on Lauri's social media channels. Help raise awareness about climate change by sharing the dunk videos on social media.

Change runs on renewables

Sustainability is at the core of Neste’s business. Neste is the world's largest producer of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel refined from waste and residues and has expanded its sustainable offering further to the chemicals and polymers sectors

Neste’s ambitious goal is to make its production carbon neutral by 2035. Furthermore, Neste is committed to reducing its customers' climate emissions by 20 million tons annually by 2030.

Together with its customers and partners, Neste will lead the world towards a sustainable future.

NBA player Lauri Markkanen has been taking concrete climate actions with Neste as every action, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction. Read Lauri’s previous climate pledges here and keep scrolling to learn more about the climate dunks created to spread awareness on how the climate crisis can be linked to the increase in severe weather conditions.

Blizzard

About twice as many extreme snow storms occurred in the United States in the latter half of the 20th century than the first. The climate crisis increases the frequency of extreme snowfalls. Warmer temperatures caused by heat-trapping greenhouse gases hold more water, and storms supplied by increasing moisture result in heavier snowfall. The warming Arctic is one of the largest causes of more frequent blizzards.

Hurricane

The frequency of intense hurricanes has increased since the 1970s in the North Atlantic, and in the future they may become more intense with higher wind speeds. Warmer ocean temperatures and higher sea levels result in more extreme hurricanes. Warmer air leading to evaporation and larger amounts of precipitation provide more fuel for hurricanes to develop.

Flash flood

As the climate crisis continues to provoke sea level rise and increased rainfall, more inland and coastal communities in the United States are finding themselves flooded. Flash floods bring destruction to every state and will only get worse. Stronger storms, heavier precipitation and higher sea levels all contribute to flash floods that result in vast property damages and at their worst, losses of lives.

Heat wave

Due to the climate crisis, record high temperatures have been tracked in the United States. Heat waves are about 7.2°F (4°C) hotter than a century ago. As average temperatures continue to rise due to the climate crisis, heat waves have become more frequent and severe. Extreme heat is one of the leading causes of weather-related deaths in the United States.

Wildfire

Climate change is a key factor in the increasing risk and extent of wildfires in the Western United States. As the climate crisis progresses, temperatures keep rising at an accelerated rate. Dry lands become ideal smolder. As drought and heat continue, explosion like wildfires become more common. Climate change has doubled the number of large wildfires between 1984 and 2015 in the western United States.
