Using waste as a resource to fight climate change

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Mahoney Environmental and Neste recycle used cooking oil into renewable fuels.

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport has set an ambitious goal to reduce its carbon emissions to net zero by 2030. To achieve this, DFW Airport decided to look at its waste management challenges as a sustainability and cost-reduction opportunity. By working with Neste and Mahoney Environmental, DFW Airport was able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and realize operational savings by creating a closed-loop system, one where its waste is turned into low-emission renewable fuels that immediately and meaningfully reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

What you will learn in this case study:

  • How treating waste as a resource can help any entity - from airports to businesses to cities - achieve their climate and financial goals.

  • The personalized approach Mahoney Environmental offered DFW Airport, and its many concessionaires, to streamline the waste management process, reduce costs, improve safety and ultimately enhance the customer experience.

  • How the Neste circular economy works and helps DFW Airport achieve its climate goals.

  • The immense potential of collecting and converting used cooking oil and other waste materials from airports across North America into renewable products.
