What is Renewable Diesel (HVO)?
What is Renewable Diesel (HVO fuel)?
Neste MY Renewable Diesel can also be referred to as HVO, Renewable Diesel, R99, green diesel or HVO diesel. HVO is an acronym for “Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil”, a type of diesel produced from waste, primarily residue oils and fats such as used cooking oil. In HVO production, these waste materials are repurposed and kept out of the waste stream. The result is high-quality renewable diesel fuel – without the carbon intensity and environmental impact of drilling for crude oil.
Renewable diesel fuel comes in all kinds of blends. It can be used both neat (100% concentration), as well as blended in any ratio with other diesel fuels. Neste MY Renewable Diesel is the only renewable diesel in the US market that guarantees every gallon sold meets the ASTM D975 hydrocarbon diesel spec, as well as the EN 15940 paraffinic diesel spec required by most OEMs. Additionally, Neste MY Renewable Diesel is the first TOP TIERTM certified renewable diesel.

Hydrotreated vegetable oil delivers improved sustainability
Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) is a more sustainable alternative to traditional diesel fuel that offers numerous environmental benefits without requiring engine modification or additional investment. HVO is also versatile and can be used in a variety of applications, including road transportation, marine fleets, rail, power generation, and heating. It is compatible with existing diesel engines and infrastructure, making it an easy and cost-effective alternative to conventional diesel fuel. As companies and governments around the world strive to reduce their carbon footprint and improve air quality, HVO is poised to play a significant role in the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

How renewable diesel is made
In the 1990s, Neste's research department developed the NEXBTL refining technology. With this breakthrough technology, Neste is able to produce high-quality renewable diesel fuel from 100% sustainably-sourced renewable raw materials. A wide variety of waste oils and fats can be used as feedstock, and the resulting renewable diesel fuel meets OEM standards. During the NEXBTL production, hydrogen is used in the refining process to separate the molecules and remove oxygen from the fatty acids that make up the fuel’s completely renewable raw material base. The outcome is a renewable diesel with a similar chemical composition to fossil diesel. As a result, Neste MY Renewable Diesel (HVO) is a drop-in diesel that can easily be used in all existing diesel-powered engines without modification. If desired, it can also be blended with other diesel fuels. Learn more about our renewable diesel production process.

What are the benefits of renewable diesel (HVO) fuel?
With Neste MY Renewable Diesel (HVO), greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by up to 75%* over the fuel’s life cycle compared to fossil diesel. It can also help reduce local, “tailpipe” emissions, which is beneficial for local air quality. In addition, filters, injectors, and exhaust emissions components can stay clean longer, and especially in older engines. Learn more about the benefits of Neste MY Renewable Diesel.

Is Neste MY Renewable Diesel better than other renewable diesels on the market?
Neste is the world's leading producer of renewable diesel fuel, with very stringent process for ensuring the integrity of our entire supply chain. Customers know that they are getting high-quality fuel that Neste has monitored from raw material, through production and distribution. They can also rely on a fuel that has been tested and shown to deliver powerful performance by leading diesel engine manufacturers.
